Pandemic Cory: Confessions of a Novel Viral Gangster
Whether you are a child or an adult, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused major changes in our usual behavior. All of us are affected by this, directly or indirectly. The title Pandemic Cory attempts to encapsulate this virus into a character and shift the emphasis to how the pandemic occurred, how we can take charge of our health to reduce severe disease, and how vaccines work.
Cory the Coronavirus tells his story, in the context of other viral epidemics. The message is that pandemics are directly linked to human behavior and that the necessity of understanding this pathogen fuels scientific discovery. As Cory explains, “we virus villains have our kryptonite. That is for you future scientists to figure out! The answers are there when you learn the right questions to ask.”
This book is intended for children ages 9 to 13. Topics that are discussed include 1) What is a virus and how is it spread? 2) Where did SARS-2 Coronavirus come from and how does it cause an infection? 3) What is an epidemic and how they are caused? 4) How does the immune system stop a virus and what can we do to improve our immune system? and 5) What can scientists do to stop the pandemic?
These themes compliment the objectives of any science class for these age groups. Children will particularly like the characters developed and the “electron micro-gallery of villainous viruses.” A glossary of terms is included at the end.
